WestConnex – M8 delivers major gains for Sydney motorists and wins 2020 Premiers’ Award
The WestConnex M8 motorway opened on Sunday 5 July, 2020 and is the second major underground stage of the WestConnex motorway network. Traversing 9km marked for two lanes in each direction, with capacity to add a third lane as required, the M8 doubles the capacity of the M5 East Tunnel, saving motorists around 30 minutes on a journey from the southwest of Sydney to the southern CBD.
As part of the joint venture, CoMade joined to provide construction phase services, systems integration, completions, permit to work and multi-discipline commissioning. Operating throughout the pandemic period, the team responded to comply with unique safe work practices and a rapidly changing landscape. Completing the complex design to construction gap analysis and rectification, rapidly mobilising a team of 300+ skills resources to enable program recovery, expedite delivery and ensure safety, cost and time efficiencies.
In recognition of the contribution such infrastructure projects make to communities, the NSW Premier awarded the M8 Motorway with a major accolade, the 2020 NSW Premier’s Awarded in its “Strong Economy” category.
“This is a fantastic achievement and truly recognises our dedication to job creation through our infrastructure projects. A huge congrats to the thousands of people who worked on M8 for many years to achieve this”.
Paul Hitchings, Director Project Delivery – M8, Transport for NSW.
In determining the award, the panel highlighted the project’s significant contribution to stimulating the NSW economy by employing more than 18,000 people across NSW with 80% of contracts awarded to NSW based companies.
