CoMade was instrumental in delivering the WestConnex M8 motorway which opened in 2020 and was the second major underground stage of the WestConnex motorway network. Traversing 9km marked for two lanes in each direction, with capacity to add a third lane as required, the M8 doubled the capacity of the M5 East Tunnel, and saves motorists around 30 minutes on a journey from the south west of Sydney to the southern CBD.

The seasoned CoMade team joined the joint venture to provide construction phase services, systems integration, completions, permit to work and multi-discipline commissioning. Operating throughout the pandemic period, the team responded to comply with unique safe work practices and a rapidly changing landscape. Completing the complex design to construction gap analysis and rectification, rapidly mobilising a team of 300+ skills resources to enable program recovery, expedite delivery and ensure safety, cost and time efficiencies.

CoMade has been supporting development of the Rozelle Interchange project since October 2021, an expansive project which provides a new underground motorway interchange to City West Link, a toll-free underground bypass of Victoria Road between the Iron Cove Bridge and the Anzac Bridge (with links to the approved Western Harbour Tunnel) This project will result in new active transport options in Rozelle and up to 10 hectares of new open space in the future Rozelle Parklands.

Responsible for complete commissioning of all tunnel and surface assets, as well as leading procedural review and recommendations, CoMade leads the project commissioning and quality assurance program. With the introduction of CyBuild, a trusted partner offering an all-in-one completions management system, CoMade has drastically increased the efficiency of construction and commissioning, delivering unprecedented safety, time and cost outcomes. Further to this, unrivalled programming and forecasting and a team that is accountable and highly capable in all disciplines of tunnel commissioning, has ensured that this major project is currently running safely, and to schedule.

The year-long, $75m refit and safety upgrade of the South Eastern Freeway’s Heysen Tunnels, will result in major upgrades to the tunnels’ safety, traffic management and incident response capabilities, in South Australia, including the installation of new tunnel lighting, ventilation, fire suppression and intelligent transport systems.

With deep expertise in tunnelling, as well as strong local knowledge, CoMade was a logical choice to complete a safety upgrade of all electrical equipment and cabling for the entire tunnel. The team are focused on partnering not only with the client and the Department of Infrastructure and Transport SA, but also other contractors to constantly look for ways to make this project a success. Weekly and fortnightly planning schedules prevent clashes with other subcontractors and ensure CoMade can predict labour requirements in advance to meet schedule needs.

With the project scheduled for completion by 2024, this has resulted in rapid mobilisation in the first few months since inception, setting a strong foundation for an on-schedule delivery.
